Is it just me or is this hard to do? I mean they are our enemies for a reason right? But here it is in Luke chapter 6 to “Love our enemies”. More than that… it’s in red font… you know what that means… straight from the mouth of Jesus.
Can you imagine Jesus standing right in front of you saying, “do good to those that hate you”? Our response… ”But Jesus you don’t understand what they did… But their attitude is so horrible… But Jesus they don’t even believe in you…” As our minds start listing all the reasons to justify why it’s ok for us to not love, Jesus goes on to say “If you love those who love you, what benefit is that to you? For even sinners love those who love them. And if you do good to those who do good to you, what benefit is that to you? For even sinners do the same.”
As believers we don’t HAVE to love our enemies…we GET to love our enemies! We understand what forgiveness is, we know how to be merciful by grace, and we learn that harboring resentfulness & bitterness hinders us from walking in the Spirit. It all begins to look more like freedom by having joy rather than any other emotions that hardens our hearts by our sin or the sin of others.
Lord, as hard as it may be please open our hearts and reveal to us our enemies and the ways we can show them love. We no longer want to grieve the Holy Spirit but begin walking in the joy of desiring blessings to those we have felt hate towards. We know we can only do this in your strength and by the grace of your son Jesus Christ. Show us how to be merciful to those around us and let your light shine through us.
“Be merciful, even as your Father is merciful.” Luke 6:27-36
